NCCI launches Energy Efficiency Engagement (3E) program

March 5, 2015

The Nordic Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Bangladesh (NCCI) in collaboration with the Danish International Development Agency (Danida) through the Embassy of Denmark launched the Energy Efficiency Engagement program on 05th March 2015.

Bangladesh Bank Governor Dr. Atiur Rahman attended the program as Chief Guest. Danish Ambassador H. E. Hanne Fugl Eskjaer, NCCI President and Managing Director of Maersk Bangladesh Shamim Ul Huq, ABB Country Manager Rajarshi Banerjee and Head of Petroleum and Mineral Resources and Engineering Department of BUET Dr. M Tamim participated as Special Guests. The programme was moderated by Danida Adviser and Business Coordinator of Energy Efficiency Engagement Stephan Skare Enevoldsen, who also delivered the keynote presentation.

The program commenced with a welcome address by NCCI President Shamim Ul Huq. He said “This cooperation with Danida not only helps today but prepare us for tomorrow. NCCI strongly believes in sustainability and to support the trade at large in becoming sustainable. The Nordic Chamber is well positioned to reach out to relevant industries through its network and its member’s supply chain.” He further added that “The success of the program depends on the willingness of our members and the trade at large. Energy Efficiency will be a major contributor to the economic growth”.

Danida Adviser and Business Coordinator Stephan Enevoldsen delivered the keynote presentation featuring Nordic experience in Energy Efficiency. He highlighted the Danish example where the industries experienced a growth of 40 percent in GDP without increasing the energy consumption. “Bangladesh can follow this example to ensure a sustainable growth, ensure better utilization of energy for not only Bangladesh but for a wider impact on climate change globally”. He also presented the goals and expectations of Energy Efficiency Engagement (3E) program to the audience.

ABB Country Manager Rajarshi Banerjee said, “the low hanging fruits should be targeted in quest of energy efficiency and the technologies are readily available”. He stressed to make the existing power infrastructure more efficient. He also shared several successful experiences with reducing energy intensity in several Industries in Bangladesh.

Dr. M Tamim highlighted that “The future growth of the industry will heavily depend on becoming more efficient. In future, household energy use will increase at a faster rate”. He presented facts on the broader situation of energy in Bangladesh. “The source of 80% of the energy used in industries is from garments, textile, and fertilizers”. He encouraged NCCI to map and identify the sectors where a major impact can be made.

Bangladesh Bank Governor Dr.Atiur Rahman stressed the need for the green initiative for sustainable economic growth. He said green banking is a catalyst for green growth. He said most of the lenders are not familiar with Energy efficiency technology and approaches and require technical support to appraise and manage loans for energy efficiency projects.

He observed that Bangladesh has maintained more than 6% real GDP growth over the last 10 years, which is poised to increase in the years ahead. “To continue the growth momentum, it has been estimated that energy consumption should grow at the rate of at least 10%,” the Bangladesh Bank governor said while addressing the function as the chief guest.

He praised the role of NCCI and Danida for supporting the green growth of Bangladesh economy by addressing the priorities in climate change adaptation and mitigation.

The main objective of the program is to promote the adoption of energy-efficient practices and technology in Bangladeshi industries leading to a significant lowering of costs and reduction of energy intensity. This will be achieved by offering companies the opportunity to get an energy assessment of their production facilities by certified consultants. The program is funded by Danida and NCCI is the implementing partners.

The Danish Ambassador H. E. Hanne Fugl Eskjaer said: “The reason for developing this Engagement is the great potential to support the growth of Bangladesh industries in a sustainable way while at the same time increasing the activities in Bangladesh by Danish and Nordic companies.”

“Energy Efficiency is the foundation for the future industrial growth of the Bangladesh stronghold sectors as it will reduce greenhouse gas emissions, reduce energy intensity and improve the sustainability of products produced in Bangladesh”, she said. “I congratulate the partners DANIDA and NCCI on this initiative and I encourage you all to engage with the new secretariat to ensure a better future for Bangladesh”.

Sustainable economic growth and security of energy and water supply are among the greatest global challenges today. As the first country in the world, Denmark has decided to lead the “Green Growth” transition and become a green and resource efficient economy entirely independent of fossil fuels by 2050.

Energy efficiency has been a key for Denmark’s green growth. From 1990 Denmark saw a 40% increase in GDP while achieving a 6% reduction in gross energy consumption. In 2013 electricity production in Denmark from renewable energy plants accounted for 46.7% of domestic electricity supply.

The program was attended by Honorable Ambassadors and Dignitaries from the Embassies, CEOs of leading Local & Multinational Companies, Leaders from the Think Tank Society, Prominent Citizens, Entrepreneurs, Women leaders, and Members of the Nordic Chamber.
